New sessions aim to increase community understanding of counter-terrorism efforts

The Leeds Prevent team has introduced free briefing sessions designed to inform members of the public and service users about the Government’s Prevent strategy. Prevent is a national programme focused on stopping individuals from becoming involved in terrorism or supporting terrorist activities through early intervention.

Overview of the Prevent Briefing Sessions

The briefings are aimed at individuals with little or no prior knowledge of Prevent. They provide an introduction to the strategy, explaining its purpose and the role of those involved in its delivery. The sessions cover several key topics, including:

  • What Prevent is and who is involved in its implementation
  • Key definitions related to Prevent and counter-terrorism
  • The importance of Prevent in safeguarding communities
  • The role of Prevent Community Engagement Officers
  • Common misconceptions about Prevent
  • How to report concerns related to radicalisation
  • An explanation of the support available through the Leeds Prevent programme

Delivery and Booking Information

The sessions can be delivered face to face and are available to community groups and service users. This approach aims to foster a better understanding of Prevent within local communities and encourage early reporting of concerns.

Those interested in arranging a briefing or seeking further information are advised to contact the Leeds Prevent team via email at prevent@leeds.gov.uk.

These briefings form part of ongoing efforts to safeguard individuals vulnerable to radicalisation, similar to other early intervention programmes addressing risks such as drug misuse and gang involvement.
