Encouraging more young women to explore technology careers

A Leeds City College student is advocating for greater female representation in technology as she pursues a career in cybersecurity. Anita Emeribe, currently studying a T Level in Digital Support and Security Services, is using her role as a student ambassador to inspire other young women to consider opportunities in the tech sector.

Student ambassador role promotes technology education

Anita has participated in events such as Girl Tech and Next Gen, where she has spoken to young people about technology-related subjects and career prospects. As both a student ambassador and course representative, she shares her experiences to encourage others, particularly girls, to take an interest in technology.

She said, “It’s important for young women to see that there is a place for them in the tech industry. Sharing my journey and giving others confidence to take that first step means a lot to me.”

Pathway into technology studies

  • Originally from Nigeria, Anita moved to the UK in September 2023.
  • She initially did not meet the GCSE entry requirements for her chosen T Level course.
  • She completed a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in IT to develop the necessary skills.
  • Now in her second year, she studies network building, security systems, and cybersecurity trends.
  • Her course includes practical experience through an industry placement.

T Levels are designed in collaboration with industry to combine classroom learning with work placements, aiming to equip students with skills needed for employment, apprenticeships, or higher education.

Industry placement experience

As part of her studies, Anita completed a 10-week paid placement with Lloyds Banking Group, working within the bank’s artificial intelligence (AI) team. During this time, she gained hands-on experience with AI-powered tools designed to assist first-time mortgage buyers and learned about the integration of AI solutions into secure banking systems.

Anita reflected on the placement: “My experience at Lloyds Banking Group was an incredible opportunity to see how the skills I’ve been learning at college are applied in a real working environment. Being part of the AI team allowed me to explore how artificial intelligence is used in banking, while learning from professionals who were always willing to share their knowledge and support my development.”

Recognition and future ambitions

In July, Anita received the Digital Enhancement Award at Leeds City College’s annual Star Awards, recognising her achievements in technology and her commitment to promoting women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

Looking ahead, Anita plans to pursue a technology-focused apprenticeship after completing her T Level, with long-term ambitions to continue her education to PhD level and build a career in intelligence and cybersecurity.

College perspective

Kamran Akram, T Level Course Leader at Leeds City College, commented on Anita’s progress: “Anita has made incredible progress, growing from a quiet learner into a confident and inspiring ambassador for women in technology. Her determination, technical skills and willingness to take on new challenges have been outstanding. Her journey is a fantastic example of how T Levels combine classroom learning with industry experience to help students build the skills and confidence for successful careers.”
