Collaboration offers insight into education and industry across borders

Fifteen students from Leeds joined 14 peers from Kempten, Germany, in a 10-day exchange programme focused on vocational training and cultural understanding. The initiative, part of the Goethe-Institut UK’s Exchange2Change project, allowed participants to explore different educational approaches and industry practices in both countries.

Programme activities and visits

During their time in Kempten, the group visited several vocational training schools, as well as companies such as KAD Event Management and Ceratizit Deutschland GmbH, a high-tech engineering and manufacturing firm. The students also had the opportunity to learn about the town’s history and local culture.

Back in Leeds, the exchange continued with collaborative projects covering a range of topics including artificial intelligence (AI), marketing, health and social care. These projects culminated in presentations based on research and interviews conducted by the students.

Topics explored by students

  • The use of artificial intelligence in education and business in the UK and Germany
  • The impact of social media on young people’s development
  • Comparisons between the UK and German health care systems and public perceptions
  • Brand identity and culturally-coded marketing strategies, including differences in colour-product perception

Support and funding

The exchange was supported by six teachers and funded by GIMAGINE, Friends of the Goethe-Institut, and Stiftung Jugendaustausch Bayern. It aimed to provide students with practical experience and a broader understanding of international vocational pathways.

Student and teacher reflections

One Business student described the experience as memorable and valuable for gaining new friendships and cultural insights. A Business and Applied IT teacher involved in the programme highlighted the benefits of incorporating international business perspectives into classroom learning, noting that it helps prepare students for a globalised workplace.
