Leeds Teams Support Local Parks Through Green Away Days
March 19, 2026Community and teamwork combine in Leeds parks initiative
Leeds City Council has introduced green team away days, offering local organisations the chance to contribute to the upkeep and restoration of the city’s parks, woodlands, cemeteries, and nature reserves. These days provide teams with practical experience in environmental conservation while fostering team spirit.
Activities and recent involvement
Participants in the green team away days engage in various conservation tasks, including tree planting, meadow management, habitat restoration, litter picking, and the removal of invasive plants. One recent example involved the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) team, who took part in a session at Morley Cemetery.
The TRU team, following their work on the development of Morley station, collaborated with Leeds City Council staff to maintain the cemetery’s grounds. Their activities included trimming overgrown trees near graves, collecting litter, and removing young invasive trees that posed a risk to gravestones.
Statements from officials and participants
- Councillor Mohammed Rafique, executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space at Leeds City Council, highlighted the benefits of the scheme: “The green team away days are a brilliant opportunity for teams to get to work together outside and help look after our treasured parks and green spaces whilst learning from our expert staff.” He also noted the contribution of the TRU team in preserving the dignity and heritage of Morley Cemetery.
- Karl Wilson from the Transpennine Route Upgrade expressed appreciation for the experience: “Volunteering at the cemetery was a fantastic opportunity for Team TRU to give something back to the local community. Our colleagues really valued the chance to spend time caring for such an important local space.” He also thanked Leeds City Council staff for their support during the day.
