Local clubs and societies recognised for commitment to safer campus culture

On 20 May, nineteen student clubs and societies at Leeds University Union (LUU) were awarded SASHA accreditation, marking their dedication to fostering a campus environment centred on consent and respect. The accreditation ceremony took place at the Terrace bar, celebrating the groups’ efforts to address sexual harassment and assault within the university community.

What is SASHA Accreditation?

The SASHA accreditation is a scheme developed in collaboration between Leeds University Union’s Students Against Sexual Harassment and Assault (SASHA) society and the Union Affairs and Communications Officer. It aims to promote safer spaces within student clubs and societies by encouraging core members to uphold standards that prevent sexual harassment and assault.

To receive the accreditation, clubs and societies must complete training provided by an LUU Consent Ambassador. They then work with LUU and SASHA to meet a set of criteria designed to ensure their activities and environments remain consensual and respectful.

The following groups were recognised at the event:

  • Men’s Rugby Union
  • Leeds RAG Fashion Show

Encouraging Wider Participation

LUU encourages other societies that have not yet received SASHA accreditation to consider applying. The accreditation process is intended to help ensure all student groups provide safe and supportive environments for their members.

This initiative reflects ongoing efforts within Leeds University to create a campus culture where respect and safety are prioritised. The collaboration between student representatives and the SASHA society highlights a proactive approach to addressing issues of sexual harassment and assault in student life.
