Leeds University Union Marks Black History Month 2026

Events and activities planned throughout October to recognise Black history and culture

Leeds University Union (LUU) is hosting a series of events this October to observe Black History Month 2026, focusing on the theme ‘Honouring Our Communities’. The initiative aims to highlight the often overlooked contributions of Black individuals to local and national communities.

Purpose of Black History Month

Black History Month takes place every October across the UK as a time to celebrate and recognise Black history and culture. The month seeks to promote understanding of Black heritage and its influence on British society. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on both the achievements and challenges faced by Black communities.

The 2026 theme, ‘Honouring Our Communities’, emphasises the everyday roles played by Black people in sustaining and enriching communities. While October serves as a dedicated period for these conversations, organisers stress the importance of ongoing engagement throughout the year.

Scheduled Events at Leeds University Union

LUU has organised a variety of events open to students and the wider community. These include cultural celebrations, film screenings, networking opportunities, and discussions designed to educate and connect participants. Key events include:

• Culture Fridays (2, 9, 16 & 23 October, 10am–4pm): Weekly events featuring food, live DJs, music, and student-led cultural activities.
• Stories on Screen: Selma (6 October, 7pm–9:30pm): A screening of the 2014 film Selma at the Pyramid Theatre, exploring themes of protest and resistance.
• Careers Fair (15 October, 12pm–4pm): Held in the Pyramid Canteen, this fair offers students the chance to meet employers and explore career opportunities.
• Black Futures Conference (15 October, 6:30pm–9pm): A networking event at the Pyramid Theatre connecting Black students with professionals, alumni, and employers.
• Stories on Screen: Sugar Rush (20 October, 7pm–9:30pm): Screening of the 2019 film Sugar Rush at the Pyramid Theatre, celebrating identity and friendship.
• Fashion Showcase (27 October, 7pm–9pm): Hosted by the African Caribbean Society and Fashion for Humanity at the Riley Smith Theatre.
• Culture Festival (30 October, 10am–4pm): A day of music, food, and cultural activities held in the LUU Precinct.
• Hex or Treat Club Night (30 October, 11pm–3am): A club night hosted by the African Caribbean Society and Project Hex at Ultra Nightclub, LS1 6NJ.

These events aim to foster a greater understanding of Black history and culture while providing spaces for celebration and community engagement within the university setting.
