January 29, 2026Students invited to apply for leadership positions in annual election
Leeds University Union (LUU) has announced the opening of nominations for its annual student officer elections, known as LeadLUU. This event allows both current students and recent graduates to stand for a variety of leadership roles within the Union for the upcoming academic year.
Expanded range of roles available
This year, the Union is offering 16 positions, including full-time, part-time, and voluntary roles. The positions available are as follows:
- 5 full-time paid Student Executives
- 1 voluntary Postgraduate Research (PGR) Trustee
- 5 part-time paid Liberation and Identity Engagement Leaders
- 5 part-time paid Faculty Engagement Leaders
The part-time roles are designed to be manageable alongside academic studies, while the full-time roles provide paid employment opportunities.
Roles and responsibilities
Student Executives and Trustees
The five full-time Student Executives serve as trustees responsible for overseeing the Union’s operations and governance. They play a key role in decision-making processes and chair board meetings. The voluntary PGR Trustee represents postgraduate research students at board meetings, ensuring their interests are considered.
Liberation and Identity Engagement Leaders
The newly introduced Liberation and Identity Engagement Leaders focus on promoting equity and representation for students from diverse backgrounds. These part-time officers work closely with trustees to ensure all student voices are heard within the Union.
Faculty Engagement Leaders
Also newly established, the Faculty Engagement Leaders act as liaisons between the Union and the university’s academic schools and faculties. They address academic support issues and foster collaboration between students, the Union, and university staff.
Benefits of student leadership
Participating as a student officer offers opportunities to develop skills and gain experience in campaigning, governance, and leadership. Officers contribute to running a large student organisation and influence decisions affecting the student body.
One current officer reflected on the experience, describing it as empowering and rewarding, highlighting the chance to make meaningful change and personal growth.
Next steps
Students interested in standing for election are encouraged to consider the available roles and submit their nominations ahead of the voting period. The Union emphasises that these roles provide valuable experiences and the chance to contribute positively to the university community.
