Leeds University Union Passes New Student Policies
March 18, 2026Student forum approves increased lockers and reproductive health support
On 9 March 2026, Leeds University Union (LUU) held its latest Better Forums event, engaging student representatives in discussions and votes on key campus issues. With 16 panellists and seven student leaders present, the forum saw strong participation and resulted in the approval of two new policy proposals.
Locker provision for commuter students
The first proposal addressed the need for additional lockers on campus, specifically for commuter students. The motion called for both LUU and the University of Leeds to provide more lockers to support students who travel to campus daily. This idea was overwhelmingly supported, receiving 15 votes in favour and one against. As a result, the policy will be implemented across campus and remain active for the next three years.
Support for reproductive health choices
The second proposal focused on LUU’s support for students’ reproductive health choices. Originally titled “Should LUU support Pro-Choice Students,” the wording was amended during the forum to better reflect the intent of providing information and resources rather than political positioning. This motion passed with 16 votes in favour and one against, establishing a new policy supporting reproductive health resources for students.
Forum procedures and additional updates
Each proposal required a 75% majority to pass, which, with 16 panellists, equated to at least 12 votes. Both proposals comfortably exceeded this threshold. The forum also included accountability updates from student officers, including Lydia Shale, Amara Relf, and Katrina Liu.
Access to forum documents
Detailed documents related to the event, including the agenda, minutes, feedback, and presentations for both proposals, were made available to attendees. These documents provide further insight into the discussions and decisions made during the forum.
Looking ahead
Better Forums provide a platform for students to propose and debate ideas aimed at improving the university experience. The next event will offer further opportunities for student involvement in shaping union and campus policies.
