Leeds Welcome Space Offers Support for Men in Beeston
February 2, 2026Community initiative provides safe space for men to connect
Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL) has reported on the positive impact of the Leeds Welcome Spaces Scheme this winter, highlighting the work of The Gambia Welfare Society Leeds (TGWS) in Beeston. The scheme involves over 200 Third and Faith Sector organisations across Leeds opening their doors to provide safe, warm, and welcoming environments for the public during the colder months.
The Gambia Welfare Society’s role in the community
The Gambia Welfare Society Leeds operates a Welcome Space at Oak House in Beeston on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. These times were chosen deliberately to offer support when many other community groups are closed. The space is specifically aimed at men, providing a place where they can meet, share food, play dominoes, and engage in conversation.
Yanks Sawo, Chairman of TGWS, emphasises the importance of creating an environment where men feel comfortable to talk openly and confidentially. Discussions often focus on family matters and the role of men in child-rearing. The group also provides access to current information on topics such as social media use, managing children’s behaviour, and understanding healthy relationships.
Impact on attendees
- Supports mental health
- Offers a sense of belonging
- Provides opportunities to learn from others
- Creates a trusted and safe space to discuss men’s issues
Feedback from participants indicates that the Welcome Space helps “break the silence” around men’s issues, which is seen as a vital aspect of the group’s value.
