Charity aims to raise 400 hours of online chat support during Leeds 400 celebrations

As Leeds marks 400 years since receiving its first Royal Charter, local domestic abuse charity Leeds Women’s Aid has launched a fundraising campaign to secure 400 hours of funding for its online chat service. The initiative coincides with the Leeds 400 year-long celebration, which invites residents and visitors to reflect on the city’s heritage and community spirit.

History and growth of Leeds Women’s Aid

Leeds Women’s Aid was established in 1972 to support women and families affected by domestic abuse. The charity opened its first refuge in 1973 and by 1990 had become the largest refuge in the country. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Leeds Women’s Aid introduced an online chat service in 2020, providing a discreet and safe way for those living with abusers to seek help when telephone calls may not be possible.

Increasing demand for online support

The online chat service has seen a steady increase in demand, with a reported 24% rise in usage from 2020 to 2025. The charity’s chief executive, Nik Peasgood, highlighted the growing need for such services, stating that public support is vital to maintain this digital lifeline for vulnerable women and families.

Details of the fundraising campaign

The campaign aims to raise funds to cover 400 hours of online chat support.
A donation of £15 funds one hour of support.
Reaching the target will provide approximately 150 opportunities for women and families to access specialist support.

Accessing support services

The online chat service is available Monday to Friday from 1pm to 4pm via the Leeds Women’s Aid website. Outside these hours, users can leave a secure message. Additionally, the Leeds Domestic Violence Service helpline operates 24/7 and can be contacted on 0113 246 0401.
