Leeds Zoo Awarded National Accreditation for Excellence
May 20, 2026Wildlife World recognised for high standards in animal care and conservation
Leeds’ Wildlife World at Lotherton Hall has been granted official accreditation by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), marking it as one of the leading zoos in the UK. This recognition follows a thorough evaluation by experts, acknowledging the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare, conservation, education, and research.
Accreditation Highlights
The BIAZA accreditation process involves detailed screenings, questionnaires, and the submission of documented evidence, going beyond standard UK and Ireland zoo licensing inspections. Wildlife World, located in Aberford, joins a select group of zoos recognised for their exceptional standards.
- Home to diverse species such as wallabies, capybaras, emus, penguins, and critically endangered Visayan warty pigs
- Active participation in international breeding and conservation programmes
- Successful breeding of the critically endangered blue-crowned laughingthrush in 2025, a rare bird species
Leeds’ Tropical World also holds BIAZA accreditation following its evaluation in 2025, making both sites among the first to be accredited under the new BIAZA scheme.
Love Your Zoo Week Activities
Both Wildlife World and Tropical World are preparing to take part in Love Your Zoo Week from 23 to 31 May. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in animal trails and learn about conservation efforts and how they can contribute to protecting wildlife.
Statements from Officials
Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space, commented:
“I’d like to congratulate all the staff at Lotherton Wildlife World on the great work they undertake in making sure that the zoo holds a world class standard. This accreditation shows our high standard of animal care and the passion we have for helping support international conservation efforts.”
“At both Wildlife World and Tropical World there’ll be lots going on for Love Your Zoo week, and they both make a great day out for the whole family.”
Dr Jo Judge, CEO of BIAZA, also praised the achievement, stating:
“Receiving accredited status is not an easy thing to do. It is testament to the passion and hard work of every member of staff.”
“Our accreditation program means visitors can be sure that BIAZA zoos and aquariums are dedicated to looking after their animals to the highest standard and to inspirational work in conservation and education. We need good zoos more than ever. We face a nature crisis and we have the power to make a big difference.”
