Local Student Gains International Experience in Greece and Bali

Elise McDonald’s educational path reflects a blend of academic study and practical international experience, beginning with her enrolment in the 14+ Academies in 2020 and progressing through various qualifications and placements abroad.
Early Studies and Skill Development
Elise started her studies at the 14+ Academies, where she took courses in Maths, English, Science, Business, ICT, and Food Industry Skills. In 2022, she advanced to Leeds City College to complete a City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Culinary Skills. During this time, she developed both culinary expertise and life skills, including learning to prepare dishes such as leek and potato soup.
International Placement in Greece
In 2023, Elise undertook an international work placement in Greece. This experience was significant in helping her clarify her future ambitions. Despite challenges such as limited knowledge of the Greek language, she received support from her tutor, Victoria Roper, which she credits as instrumental during this period. Through this placement, Elise also improved her Greek language skills and gained valuable cultural insights.
Further Studies and Bali Placement
Returning to Leeds, Elise pursued an NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Travel & Tourism, achieving distinctions in several assignments. This course led her to discover a passion for aviation. Subsequently, she participated in a work placement with Think Pacific in Bali, Indonesia.
Her time in Bali included exposure to local traditions, community practices, and spirituality, alongside practical activities such as a beach clean-up in challenging heat conditions. Elise described this environmental work as one of her proudest moments during the placement.
Current Plans and Reflections
Having completed her Level 3 Certificate in Travel & Tourism, Elise is currently working as a bartender while planning her next steps. She emphasises the importance of taking time to enjoy life and approach her future career with enthusiasm and commitment. Her experiences have fostered a continued interest in exploring new cultures and personal growth.
