New Accessible Gondola Added to Leeds Wheel of Light
December 16, 2025Improved access for wheelchair users at popular festive attraction
The Leeds Wheel of Light, a well-known feature at the annual Ice Cube at Christmas event, has introduced a new accessible gondola for the first time. This addition aims to make the 33-metre-tall observation wheel more inclusive, allowing wheelchair users and their guests to enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline.
Details of the new accessible gondola
- The gondola is designed to accommodate one wheelchair user along with two accompanying guests.
- It features a platform measuring 1 metre by 1.3 metres, suitable for most wheelchairs.
- The maximum supported weight per pod is 450 kilograms.
The new carriage was developed through a collaboration between International Funfairs, Leeds City Council, and the wheel’s owner, John Noyce. This addition responds to a long-standing request from the council to improve accessibility at the attraction.
Statements from organisers and officials
Roger Tuby of International Funfairs commented on the new gondola, emphasising the importance of accessibility: “Creating a welcoming and accessible experience for everyone is a key priority for us. We’re delighted to debut this new gondola in Leeds and thrilled to see guests already benefiting from it.”
Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, said: “Christmas is a magical time in Leeds, with so many people coming together to enjoy our incredible events programme each and every year. It’s wonderful to hear that this year, our attractions will be more accessible than ever over what will be a memorable festive season.”
Accessibility across Ice Cube at Christmas
Accessibility improvements are not limited to the Wheel of Light. The outdoor covered ice rink on Millennium Square is fully accessible to wheelchair users and other disabled visitors. Public skating sessions are open to all, with dedicated accessible sessions held every Thursday at 10:15am. These sessions offer a quieter environment for those who may prefer extra space or support on the ice.
The Wheel of Light and ice rink are part of a wider festive offering that includes Christmas market stalls and rides across Millennium Square, Victoria Gardens, and Cookridge Street, providing a festive atmosphere for visitors of all ages.

Ice Cube at Christmas runs until 31 December 2025, excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It operates alongside Leeds Christmas Market, which takes place in City Square until Sunday 21 December 2025.
