New Bikes Provide More Opportunities for Leeds Children

Leeds Children’s Charity updates bike fleet to support children’s development

Leeds Children’s Charity has recently replaced its ageing fleet of bicycles with 27 new bikes, thanks to funding from Sport England and Leonard Curtis. This investment aims to enable more children to participate safely and confidently in cycling activities at Lineham Farm, one of the charity’s key outdoor centres.

Funding and new equipment

The charity received £11,250 from Sport England, funded by The National Lottery, alongside a £900 contribution from Leonard Curtis. These funds were used to purchase a range of new bikes in various sizes, allowing children of different ages and abilities to take part in cycling activities.

Supporting children’s first experiences

For many children supported by Leeds Children’s Charity, learning to ride a bike is a new experience. During a recent residential visit from one of the charity’s Partner Schools, nine children learned to ride a bike for the first time. The residential visit involved 25 children, many of whom were staying away from home overnight for the first time.

The charity works closely with schools to ensure children feel safe, welcomed, and supported throughout their stay at Lineham Farm. This includes providing facilities that accommodate the needs of different groups and communities. For example, one child with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), who staff initially doubted would attend, was able to spend the entire day at the farm feeling safe and included.

Benefits beyond cycling skills

Learning to ride a bike was not just about acquiring a new skill; it also helped children build self-belief, overcome fears, and discover their capabilities. The charity emphasises that every child deserves opportunities to develop confidence and resilience through such experiences.

Extending impact through bike donations

The previous fleet of bikes is being donated to another Partner School where many children currently lack access to bicycles or opportunities to learn to ride. These bikes will be used during school time, further expanding the reach of the project and allowing more children to experience the benefits of cycling.
