Leeds University Union launches new student leadership positions to enhance academic support

Leeds University Union (LUU) has introduced a new set of student leadership roles called Faculty Engagement Leaders as part of a recent restructuring of its student representation system. These positions aim to strengthen the relationship between the Union and the university faculties, focusing on academic support and student engagement.

Purpose and Structure of Faculty Engagement Leaders

The Faculty Engagement Leaders are a group of five student officers, each representing a combination of faculties within the university. Their primary responsibility is to act as a liaison between students in their faculty and both LUU and the university administration. By doing so, they seek to ensure that students receive appropriate academic support and that their concerns and suggestions are communicated effectively.

Unlike traditional sabbatical roles, these positions are designed to be flexible and compatible with students’ academic commitments. Those elected to these roles are not required to take a sabbatical year and can hold the position alongside their studies.

Faculty Representation

The five Faculty Engagement Leaders represent the following areas:

  • Biological Sciences, Medicine and Health
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences
  • Arts, Humanities and Culture
  • Leeds University Business School
  • Social Sciences and Environment

Each leader is expected to work closely with students within their respective faculties to gather input and feedback, which they will bring to discussions about university relations and academic support systems.

Collaboration with Welfare and Liberation Officer

The Faculty Engagement Leaders will also collaborate with the Welfare and Liberation Officer to help create an accessible, safe, and comfortable environment for all students. This partnership aims to ensure that the Union’s spaces and community initiatives consider the diverse needs of the student body.

Application and Eligibility

Only students who are members of the respective faculties are eligible to apply for these roles. This requirement ensures that representatives have a direct connection to the student communities they serve, facilitating accurate and relevant advocacy.

Nominations for the Faculty Engagement Leader positions are currently open, inviting students to participate in the election process and contribute to shaping academic support at Leeds University.
