Students invited to apply for newly restructured leadership positions

Leeds University Union (LUU) has announced the opening of nominations for its LeadLUU Liberation Engagement Leaders, introducing a restructured system with five distinct roles aimed at representing and supporting marginalised student groups. These positions are designed to work alongside students’ academic commitments without requiring a sabbatical year.

Purpose and structure of the Liberation Engagement Leaders

The Liberation Engagement Leaders will collaborate closely with the Welfare and Liberation Officer to promote an accessible, safe, and inclusive environment within the Union. Their work focuses on ensuring that all students feel represented and supported during their time at Leeds.

The five roles available are:

  • LGBTQ+ Engagement Leader: This role focuses on the needs and representation of LGBTQ+ students. Applicants are asked to self-identify as LGBTQ+ to ensure authentic representation.
  • Gender Engagement Leader: Aimed at fostering equality and respect for students of all genders, this position is open to those who self-identify as a marginalised gender.
  • Race & Ethnicity Engagement Leader: This role works to create a fair and representative space for students from marginalised racial or ethnic backgrounds.
  • Disabled & Neurodivergent Engagement Leader: Focused on accessibility, this position supports students with disabilities and/or neurodivergence, with applicants required to self-identify accordingly.
  • Class & Social Inequalities Engagement Leader: This role addresses disparities related to social class and circumstances, supporting students such as working-class individuals, student-parents, and estranged students.

Role expectations and application details

The Liberation Engagement Leaders are expected to represent their communities effectively, organise events and campaigns, and work towards making the Union a welcoming space for all students. The roles are structured to complement academic schedules, without the need for a sabbatical year or completion after studies.

Students interested in these leadership opportunities are encouraged to nominate themselves and participate in the upcoming elections. These positions also contribute to the governance of the Union, with elected leaders becoming trustees.

Further information and nomination details are available on the Leeds University Union website.
