Initiative aims to assist working carers across the region

A new programme launched in West Yorkshire seeks to provide enhanced support for unpaid carers balancing work and caring responsibilities. The Employers for Carers platform, available since April 2025, offers practical resources designed to help both employers and carers manage these challenges more effectively.

Background and funding

The platform is part of a regional initiative coordinated by Volition, a local organisation involved in supporting carers. It operates under a two-year umbrella membership provided by Carers UK, which began in April 2025. This membership is shared with West Yorkshire local authorities, including Leeds City Council.

The West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board secured access to the platform through funding from the Accelerating Reform Fund awarded in 2024. This fund supports projects aimed at improving services for unpaid carers across the region.

Features of the Employers for Carers platform

  • Provides practical tools and resources for managers to better understand and support working carers within their teams.
  • Offers resources directly accessible to working carers to help them manage the balance between employment and caring duties.
  • Allows smaller organisations across Leeds to access the platform via Leeds City Council’s membership.

Access and further information

Through Leeds City Council’s participation, smaller organisations in Leeds can benefit from the platform’s resources without needing individual memberships. This approach aims to extend support to a wider range of employers and carers within the city.
