New Play Space Opens for Children in Beeston

Community project transforms unused land into adventure playground

A collaboration between Yorkshire Contemporary and Rowland Road Working Men’s Club has led to the creation of a new play area for children in Beeston, supported by a grant from the Leeds Civic Trust Community Fund.

The project, named Rowland Road Play Patch, focused on revitalising previously unused land behind the working men’s club. Working under the theme of ‘celebrating place’, the initiative aimed to bring local communities together to develop a welcoming and vibrant public space.

Community involvement and volunteer efforts

Local residents were actively involved in shaping the development and use of the play patch. Engagement activities reached 285 people through play sessions, creative making, and conversations about the space’s future. Volunteers contributed nearly 2,270 hours to the project, reflecting significant community commitment.

• Arts and crafts sessions
• Areas for sitting, talking, and social connection

The play patch is open every Saturday, providing a regular opportunity for local families and children to engage in creative and outdoor activities together.

Community impact and recognition

The project has reportedly helped build relationships within the community, increased confidence among participants, and offered leadership opportunities for volunteers. It has also fostered a lasting sense of local ownership of the space.

In recognition of its success, Rowland Road Play Patch received the ‘Inspiring Creativity Through Play, Arts & Culture’ Award at the Child Friendly Leeds Awards 2026.
