Additional support role funded through Jacqui’s Million donations

Leeds Children’s Hospital has appointed an additional Play Specialist in its Paediatric Radiotherapy Department, funded by donations to the Jacqui’s Million appeal. The department provides care for children and young people undergoing radiotherapy treatment, and the new role aims to enhance the support available to patients and their families throughout the week.

Role of the Play Specialist

Yoyo, the newly appointed Play Specialist, highlighted the importance of play in helping children cope with the challenges of radiotherapy. She explained that play activities, such as racing to the treatment room or decorating radiotherapy masks, can help create a more positive and familiar environment during what can be a stressful time for young patients.

Play is recognised as an integral part of a child’s experience in hospital, providing distraction, comfort, and a sense of normality. The presence of a dedicated Play Specialist throughout the week ensures that children and their families have consistent access to this form of support.

Impact on Patients and Families

  • Helps reduce anxiety for children and their parents, especially on the first day of treatment
  • Provides opportunities for children to engage in enjoyable activities despite their medical treatment
  • Supports emotional wellbeing by creating a positive and familiar environment
  • Facilitates better cooperation with treatment through distraction and reassurance

The additional Play Specialist role is part of ongoing efforts to improve the experience of paediatric patients undergoing radiotherapy at Leeds Children’s Hospital.
