Josie Burrows Shares Her Experience Working in Construction Education

Josie Burrows joined Leeds College of Building (LCB) in the summer of 2022, shortly after moving to Leeds. Initially part of the Admissions team, she supported student recruitment and learner support funds before transitioning to her current role as Events Officer within the Marketing team.

Background and Early Experience

Before joining LCB, Josie worked as a health and safety operative at a Nuclear Power Station in her hometown. This role provided her with valuable insight into the construction industry and a deeper respect for construction workers. She views her position at LCB as an opportunity to continue expanding her knowledge of the sector while contributing to the development of future professionals.

Current Role and Responsibilities

As Events Officer, Josie is involved in planning and organising key college events. These include Open Days, the BIG Awards Ceremony, and Graduation. Her work requires collaboration with various departments and external stakeholders, offering a diverse and engaging day-to-day experience.

Work Environment and Team Collaboration

Josie highlights the strong sense of community at LCB, noting that collaboration extends beyond individual teams. She describes the workplace as supportive, with colleagues across different roles and levels working together to achieve common goals.

Achievements and College Developments

One of Josie’s notable experiences was witnessing two students she supported while working as an Employability Officer win awards at the BIG Awards Ceremony. These students secured apprenticeships following successful placements, reflecting the positive impact of the college’s employer relationships on student progression.

Since Josie started, LCB has undergone significant growth and a rebranding process, resulting in a more modern image that aligns with its evolving student demographic. The college has also recently acquired a new building near its North Street site, indicating ongoing expansion and potential new opportunities for staff and students.

Career Progression and Future Outlook

Josie has worked across three different teams at LCB, attributing her career development to the support of her managers. Looking ahead, she hopes to see continued growth at the college, particularly with the new facilities coming into use.

Encouraging Women in Construction

Josie emphasises the increasing presence of women in the construction industry and at LCB. She believes that encouraging more women to consider careers in construction will help break down stereotypes and promote a more equal workforce.

Summary

Describing LCB as “a warm, welcoming workplace,” Josie’s experience reflects both personal and institutional development within the college, highlighting its role in supporting staff and students in the construction sector.
