Research Explores Immune Cell Behaviour in CLL Treatment
November 25, 2025New study investigates immune response during first-line therapy for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) is the most common form of leukaemia in the UK. Despite advances in oral treatments that have improved patient outcomes, challenges such as disease relapse and compromised immune systems remain significant concerns. A new PhD research project is focusing on the behaviour of normal B cells, a key component of the immune system, during CLL treatment.
Understanding B Cells in CLL
B cells play a vital role in immune defence by producing antibodies and supporting immune responses. However, in CLL patients, these cells are often suppressed both by the disease itself and by the treatments used, which can lead to increased vulnerability to infections.
The research employs advanced single-cell sequencing technology to study normal B cells at a detailed level. This approach allows scientists to analyse individual cells to better understand their function and behaviour during treatment and relapse.
Methodology and Clinical Trials
The project uses a novel technique to isolate rare normal B cells from blood samples collected from patients participating in major UK clinical trials, including the FLAIR and STATIC trials. These trials investigate first-line treatments for CLL, providing valuable data on how therapies impact immune cells over time.
Aims and Potential Impact
- Examine how normal B cells respond to modern CLL therapies during treatment and relapse
- Identify changes in immune function caused by different treatment regimens
- Develop personalised treatment strategies to enhance immune recovery
- Reduce the risk of infections associated with weakened immunity
- Extend periods of healthy remission for patients living with CLL
By improving understanding of immune cell dynamics in CLL, this research hopes to contribute to better management of the disease and improved quality of life for patients.
