Community groups invited to join celebrations with days out and talks

The Settle Carlisle Railway is marking its 150th anniversary next year with a series of events and activities designed to engage local groups and visitors. The railway, which has a rich history and scenic route, is offering a variety of experiences beyond train travel to encourage participation from diverse community groups.

Days Out Along the Railway Line

The railway is organising full days out for groups, including those from Leeds, with support available for travel arrangements. An on-train guide will accompany groups to provide information about the railway line, the surrounding scenery, and to answer questions throughout the journey.

Activities available for groups include:

  • Guided walks and talks covering heritage, botany, and local history
  • Theatre performances related to the railway’s story
  • Experiences in historic signal boxes at locations such as Armathwaite and Settle
  • Fossil hunts at Ribblehead
  • Visits to tearooms offering cakes and bakes
  • Special interest group meetings, including art, music, and book clubs
  • Interactive sessions such as playing the Lithophone at Horton
  • Rail safety and educational sessions tailored for schools and uniformed groups, supporting badge achievement

Support for Group Visits

The Settle Carlisle Railway operates as a charity and may be able to access funding to assist with the costs of group visits. Groups concerned about expenses are encouraged to make contact to discuss potential support options.

Alternative: Talks and Presentations

For groups unable to travel along the line, the railway offers the option of inviting a speaker to deliver talks or presentations about various aspects of the railway’s history and operations. These sessions aim to provide an engaging experience for groups interested in learning more without visiting the railway in person.

Groups interested in arranging a day out or a speaker session can contact Anna Jackson via email at anna@settlecarlisletrust.org.uk for further information and bookings.
