Local bricklaying students begin heritage project at Living Potential Care Farm

A group of bricklaying students from Leeds College of Building (LCB) have commenced restoration work on a Victorian walled garden located at the Living Potential Care Farm in Wetherby. The project aims to preserve the historic structure while providing the students with practical experience in heritage bricklaying.

Project Background and Scope

Living Potential Care Farm is an educational and inclusive community farm that spans over 500 acres. It focuses on earth-friendly practices and relies on donations and fundraising to maintain its facilities and equipment. The decision to restore the Victorian walled garden followed several site visits and discussions between LCB and Living Potential staff, who agreed this would be a suitable starting point for their collaborative efforts.

The restoration work involves the careful demolition of certain sections of the garden wall, followed by cleaning, pointing, and rebuilding. This process is expected to take several months, allowing students to develop and refine their skills in heritage brickwork.

Educational and Community Benefits

The project forms part of LCB’s commitment to offering students hands-on experience with real-world construction projects, while also supporting the local community. Brickwork lecturer Gurjit Rayat, who accompanied the students during their visit, highlighted the broader significance of the work:

  • Encouraging students to see how their skills can contribute beyond academic or financial goals
  • Demonstrating the tangible impact of their efforts on the community
  • Preserving a piece of Yorkshire’s historical heritage

The restoration work at the walled garden is expected to be the first of several projects at the farm, with further collaborations likely once the current phase is completed.
