Summer Roadworks Planned for Dawsons Corner and Stanningley Bypass
July 7, 2026Essential improvements to affect Leeds-Bradford route
Leeds City Council has announced a series of road repairs and resurfacing works scheduled to take place this summer on the Stanningley Bypass and at Dawsons Corner. The works form part of a wider improvement scheme aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing safety on this key route between Leeds and Bradford.
Details of the planned works
The improvements will be carried out over a four-week period from Monday 27 July to Tuesday 26 August 2026. To facilitate the works, a contraflow traffic management system will be introduced on the Stanningley Bypass, allowing traffic to continue flowing in both directions while repairs are underway. The contraflow will operate as follows:
- Southbound contraflow: 8pm Monday 27 July to Monday 10 August
- Northbound contraflow: 5am Tuesday 11 August to Friday 21 August
Additional traffic management measures include a 30mph speed limit in place 24 hours a day throughout the works. There will also be partial closures during the setup and switch-over periods, with signed local diversions provided.
Overnight closures
Full overnight closures on the Stanningley Bypass near Swinnow Lane are planned for resurfacing work on the following dates:
- Monday 24 August, 8pm to 5am
- Tuesday 25 August, 8pm to 5am
Additional overnight closures will be required to install, switch, and remove the contraflow system on:
- Monday 27 July (contraflow installation – southbound)
- Tuesday 28 July (contingency date)
- Monday 10 August (contraflow switch)
- Friday 21 August (removal of contraflow)
Background and expected benefits
This phase of work builds on repairs carried out over the past four summers, which included over 140 carriageway repairs along the Stanningley Bypass as part of the council’s annual maintenance programme. The overall £44.179 million Dawsons Corner and Stanningley Bypass improvement scheme aims to:
- Reduce congestion and delays on the route between Leeds and Bradford
- Improve journey time reliability for buses
- Provide safer crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists
- Support economic growth across West Yorkshire
Advice for road users
Delays are expected, particularly during peak times, despite the works being scheduled during the school summer holidays when traffic volumes are typically lower. Road users travelling between Leeds and Bradford on the A647 or using the A6120 are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, follow signed diversions, and consider alternative routes where possible.
