Deaf Experience (DEX) offers tailored services for deaf youth

Deaf Experience (DEX) is a deaf-led charity established in 1994 that provides support and opportunities for deaf children and young people aged 11 to 30 across Yorkshire. The organisation aims to create inclusive spaces where deaf young people can build confidence, develop life skills, and connect with others who share their experiences.

Services and activities

DEX delivers a range of activities designed with input from deaf young people themselves. These include:

  • Youth clubs and social events
  • Residential trips
  • Leadership training
  • Cultural projects celebrating Deaf identity and British Sign Language (BSL)
  • Advocacy and wellbeing support

The organisation also works with families, schools, and partner organisations to improve understanding of the needs of deaf young people, particularly those in mainstream education who may feel isolated.

Target group and approach

DEX supports deaf and hard of hearing young people, as well as those who use BSL. The charity emphasises that its services are not just provided for deaf young people but are designed with their involvement, ensuring that the activities and support meet their specific needs.
