Leeds Children’s Charity Provides Day of Activities and Support

On 10th September 2026, Leeds Children’s Charity hosted a Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Lineham Farm, welcoming 81 children and young people along with their families and carers. The event was organised in partnership with Jayne Harris, Practitioner Lead for the Leeds Child Abuse and Neglect Team’s Multisystemic Therapy (MST) service.

Purpose and Context of the Event

The picnic aimed to offer children an opportunity to enjoy a day of fun and new experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Many of the attendees come from families facing challenges, including poverty, which affects approximately one in four children in Leeds. Such circumstances can limit access to leisure activities, holidays, and opportunities for quality family time.

Leeds Children’s Charity emphasises the importance of play, exploration, and confidence-building for children, regardless of their background. Events like the Teddy Bears’ Picnic are designed to help families create positive memories and strengthen relationships.

Activities and Experiences at Lineham Farm

During the event, children and families participated in a variety of activities across the farm, including:

  • Bushcraft activities
  • Low ropes challenges
  • Arts and crafts
  • Karaoke
  • Sports day games
  • A teddy bear hunt
  • Outdoor play and exploration

The day was filled with opportunities for children to try new things, build resilience, and develop confidence while enjoying time with loved ones.

Reflections on the Event

Jayne Harris highlighted the significance of the day, noting, “Today was their summer holiday.” This statement reflects the reality that for some children, this event may have been their only day out or holiday during the summer period.

She further explained that experiences like the Teddy Bears’ Picnic can:

  • Strengthen family relationships
  • Create positive shared memories
  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Encourage social interaction
  • Provide access to new experiences
  • Support children’s emotional wellbeing

Such moments, while seemingly small, can have a lasting impact on a child’s development and outlook.

Community Partnerships and Support

The event exemplifies the role of community partnerships in providing inclusive opportunities for children and families facing difficulties. Leeds Children’s Charity continues to work towards ensuring more children in Leeds can access safe breaks and outdoor adventures that contribute to positive childhood experiences.
