New chance to contribute to police accountability in West Yorkshire

The West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Partnership is inviting applications for volunteers to join the Custody Detention Scrutiny Panel. This panel plays a role in overseeing police practices related to individuals held in custody across West Yorkshire.

Role and purpose of the Custody Detention Scrutiny Panel

The Custody Detention Scrutiny Panel supports the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in holding the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police accountable for how detainees are treated. Policing activities such as arresting individuals and securing evidence are essential but can be significant and distressing experiences for those involved.

The panel aims to provide independent scrutiny and transparency concerning custody practices. Members review issues including:

  • Use of strip searches
  • Application of force
  • Length of detention
  • Access to services for detainees
  • Disproportionality in custody treatment

Membership details and commitments

The panel covers all five West Yorkshire districts: Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, and Wakefield. It meets at least four times annually during weekdays. Members are eligible to claim reasonable travel and other expenses.

Applicants should be over 18 years old and live, work, or study within West Yorkshire. They must be able to travel to meetings across the region. Members come from varied backgrounds, including those with lived experience of custody, community advocates, scrutineers, or experts able to critically assess information and contribute to fair decision-making.

Membership is for a minimum term of two years, with support provided to ensure all voices are heard.

Interested individuals can apply by reading the Welcome Pack and completing the Application Form available through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Applications must be submitted by Sunday 19 April 2026.
