Consultation opens for voluntary and community sector organisations

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) has invited voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations to contribute to the development of a new regional strategy focused on learning and creativity. This initiative aims to align with the ambitions set out in the Local Growth Plan and the Mayor of West Yorkshire’s 2024 manifesto.

Strategy aims and scope

The forthcoming ‘Region of Learning and Creativity’ strategy intends to outline how skills development across West Yorkshire can support broader regional goals. It will emphasise the importance of partnerships, recognising that effective skills provision intersects with areas such as employment, culture, and health.

While West Yorkshire has many positive attributes, the strategy acknowledges that not all communities currently benefit equally from opportunities related to learning and creativity. The Combined Authority sees further devolution as a means to enhance inclusivity and deliver benefits to all areas of the region.

Engagement opportunities for VCSE organisations

WYCA is actively seeking input from VCSE groups working across West Yorkshire to help shape the strategy. An open engagement session is scheduled to take place via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 4 February from 11:00am to 12:00pm, specifically for Leeds-based VCSE organisations.

  • Organisations interested in attending are asked to contact skills.admin@westyorks-ca.gov.uk.
  • Those unable to attend on this date are encouraged to request alternative opportunities to provide feedback.

Although the formal consultation period will close shortly, WYCA plans to launch the final strategy during the summer alongside related policy announcements and community stories, with ongoing opportunities for input.

Background

The strategy follows the Mayor of West Yorkshire’s manifesto theme for the 2024 elections and is part of the Combined Authority’s wider approach to regional development. It highlights the role of learning and creativity in supporting economic growth and social well-being.

For further details and updates, VCSE organisations and interested parties are encouraged to stay in contact with WYCA through the provided email address.
