Health officials encourage eligible individuals to get flu and Covid-19 vaccines

Public health officials in Leeds are urging residents to take advantage of free winter vaccinations against flu and Covid-19. These viruses tend to spread more easily during the colder months when people spend more time indoors, increasing the risk of serious illness, especially among vulnerable groups.

Who should consider vaccination?

Vaccinations are particularly recommended for:

  • Older adults
  • Pregnant women
  • Young children
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Individuals with long-term health conditions

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of severe illness or hospitalisation. Those who receive the vaccines are more likely to experience milder symptoms and recover faster if infected.

Early flu season and vaccination availability

The UK Health Security Agency has indicated that the flu season may be starting earlier than usual this year. Health officials advise all eligible people to book their vaccinations as soon as possible to ensure timely protection.

Vaccinations can be booked through various channels, including:

  • General Practitioners (GPs)
  • Local pharmacies
  • The NHS app
  • The national booking service

Those eligible for both flu and Covid-19 vaccines may be able to receive them during the same appointment.

Additional vaccination programmes

  • From 1 December, community clinics will be available at participating pharmacies for children from reception age to year 11 who miss their in-school vaccination sessions.
  • A new national programme is collaborating with charity partners to offer flu and pneumococcal vaccinations to people experiencing homelessness, including those sleeping rough or staying in hostels and night shelters.
  • Vaccinations against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are available for pregnant women and adults aged 75 to 79, aimed at preventing serious respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

Statements from local officials

Councillor Emma Flint, Leeds City Council’s executive member for equalities, adults and health, highlighted the importance of vaccination, noting that last winter’s flu vaccination programme prevented an estimated 100,000 hospital admissions and 7,000 deaths nationally. She emphasised that protection from previous vaccinations diminishes over time and that viruses can change annually, making yearly vaccination essential for vulnerable individuals.

Victoria Eaton, director of public health for Leeds City Council, urged eligible residents to book their appointments promptly, citing early signs of the flu season and the benefits of vaccination in reducing serious illness and easing pressure on NHS and social care services during winter.
