Yorkshire Brain Appeal Supports Research into Brain Conditions
April 1, 2026Advancing Diagnosis and Treatment for Neurological Diseases
The Yorkshire Brain Appeal is a research initiative focused on improving diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for patients with various brain conditions. The appeal funds studies into neurological diseases including epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Research Leadership and Clinical Trials
A research team led by Professor Helen Ford is conducting studies into brain diseases and facilitating patient access to clinical trials within Leeds. This work aims to enhance understanding of brain conditions and develop new treatment options.
Recent Study on Multiple Sclerosis
One of the recent projects supported by Leeds Hospitals Charity involved Clinical Fellow Dr Linford Fernandes, who completed a pilot study involving 42 patients with progressive MS. The study investigated the effects of different treatments and drugs on hand mobility.
The findings from this research are intended to assist clinicians in developing more precise methods for monitoring hand function in patients. Dr Fernandes hopes that these monitoring techniques will become part of routine clinical care for individuals experiencing difficulties with hand movement.
