Guiseley Academy Reach Wharfedale FA Challenge Cup Final
February 26, 2026Young Lions secure first final appearance in 20 years
Guiseley AFC’s Academy team has reached the final of the Wharfedale FA Challenge Cup for the first time in two decades after a 4-2 victory over Horsforth St Margaret’s second team in the semi-final.
The match took place at the Leeds Trinity University 4G pitch in Horsforth, where Guiseley’s young side, primarily composed of 16 and 17-year-olds, demonstrated resilience and skill against an experienced open age men’s team.
Match Summary
The game began with Horsforth applying early pressure but failing to convert their chances. Guiseley gradually found their rhythm, with striker Zac Rushworth forcing saves from the opposition goalkeeper. The first goal came in the 31st minute when Wil Temple scored following a strong run and assist from Rushworth.
Despite Guiseley taking the lead, Horsforth responded quickly after the break, equalising in the 47th minute through Lucas Khan. Guiseley made tactical substitutions shortly after, bringing on Lucas Alexander and Ibrahim Origbaajo.
Horsforth’s discipline faltered as two players, Callum Rankin and Aidan Tierney, were sent off following second yellow cards. Guiseley capitalised on this advantage with Bailey Thompson converting a penalty to make it 2-1.
Wil Temple extended Guiseley’s lead with a strike in the 73rd minute, but Horsforth remained competitive, reducing the deficit to 3-2 through a free-kick goal by Josh Parrott. In the closing minutes, Temple completed his hat-trick with a long-range effort, sealing a 4-2 victory for Guiseley.
Disciplinary Issues
- Guiseley’s Lawrence Ford received a 10-minute sin bin during the match.
- Horsforth finished the game with nine men due to two red cards.
Historical Context
Guiseley AFC holds the record for the most wins in the Wharfedale FA Challenge Cup, having won the trophy 21 times, predominantly through their first team. The first team’s success included a record eight consecutive wins from 1960-61 to 1967-68. After progressing up the league pyramid, the first team became ineligible to compete, with the Reserves taking part and achieving their own successes.
This season marks the Academy’s first entry into the competition, and reaching the final represents a significant achievement for the young squad.
