New managerial team to lead Guiseley AFC forward

Guiseley AFC has confirmed the appointment of Ian Richards as the club’s new first team manager. Richards joins the Lions following successful periods at Stocksbridge Park Steels and Penistone Church, where he earned a reputation for player development and building competitive squads.

Managerial background and achievements

Richards’ recent tenure at Stocksbridge Park Steels was marked by significant progress. In the 2024/25 season, he guided the team to promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division, the club’s first return to that level in eleven years. Under his leadership, Stocksbridge evolved from a mid-table side to play-off contenders, finishing third before securing promotion through the play-offs.

Prior to Stocksbridge, Richards spent eleven years at Penistone Church FC. During this period, he helped the club progress from the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League to the Premier Division of the Northern Counties East League. Penistone Church achieved notable league finishes, including second place in the 2018/19 season and a close challenge in 2019/20 before the season was curtailed due to the pandemic. The club also reached five cup finals, winning three trophies, and made it to the FA Cup third qualifying round in their first participation.

New coaching team and contracts

Joining Richards will be long-term assistant manager Andy Ring and first team coach Pete Goldstraw. All three have signed contracts running until May 2028. They will observe Guiseley’s upcoming match against Hednesford Town from the stands as they begin their tenure.

Selection process and club statements

The managerial vacancy attracted over 20 applicants, with club officials conducting a thorough assessment including interviews with a competitive shortlist. Guiseley’s Football Secretary and General Manager, James Pickles, commented on the appointment:

  • Richards has been closely monitored due to his consistent progress with Stocksbridge, particularly over the last 18 months.
  • Players who have worked under Richards speak highly of his character and management style.
  • The club expressed thanks to Stocksbridge Park Steels for their cooperation during the appointment process.

Pickles also acknowledged the interim management of Liam Ridehalgh and his assistant Matthew Maslak, noting their professionalism and commitment during the transition period. Ridehalgh will return to the playing squad following the next fixture.

Manager’s vision for Guiseley AFC

Upon his appointment, Ian Richards stated his ambition to help Guiseley compete at a higher level, specifically aiming to return to the National League North. He emphasised the need to rebuild confidence within the squad and focus on winning matches to improve their league standing.

Richards also outlined his footballing principles, expressing confidence that his style of play will be embraced by both players and supporters. He concluded by thanking Liam Ridehalgh for his efforts during the management transition and wishing him a swift return to fitness as a player.

Upcoming fixture

Guiseley AFC will host Hednesford Town at Nethermoor on Saturday, 1 November 2025, in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division. The new management team will observe the match from the stands as they prepare to take charge.
