Late penalty secures draw at Nethermoor

Guiseley AFC and Workington played out a 1-1 draw in a closely contested Northern Premier League Premier Division match at Nethermoor on Saturday, 7 March 2026. The match saw both teams create chances but ultimately settle for a point each in front of a crowd of 753.

Workington take early lead

The visitors from Cumbria started strongly, taking the lead just five minutes into the game. Isaac Whitehall delivered a cross into the box which Dan Hopper converted past Guiseley goalkeeper Joe Cracknell. Workington nearly doubled their advantage shortly after, but a low shot from Jake Allan was saved by Cracknell.

Guiseley respond but miss early chances

Guiseley quickly sought to respond, with top scorer Jordan Thewlis having two early opportunities to equalise. However, his lobbed shot went over the bar and a subsequent effort was scuffed wide. The Lions were awarded a penalty after Jack Emmett was fouled in the box, but Thewlis’ spot kick was saved by Workington keeper Alex Mitchell.

Thewlis appeared to score from a rebound shortly after, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The first half ended with limited clear chances, though both sides had efforts saved or missed in injury time.

Second half and penalty equaliser

The second half saw Workington create the first chance, with Luke Hunter’s lob narrowly cleared by Guiseley defenders. Workington’s Hopper also missed a good opportunity with a scuffed shot. Guiseley were awarded a second penalty after Elliot Owen was fouled, and this time Thewlis converted confidently to level the score.

Both teams continued to press for a winner, with substitutes making impacts but failing to find the net. Workington’s John Lufudu and Joao Silva for Guiseley both had shots blocked. In the closing stages, Guiseley even pushed centre back Jake Lawlor forward in search of a goal, but the visitors held on.
