Odunston scores his first goal as Lions maintain strong pre-season form

Guiseley continued their positive pre-season run with a 3-1 win against Pontefract Collieries at the Hunters Stadium on Tuesday evening. The victory marked their fifth consecutive pre-season success, with Lucas Odunston opening his account for the club in the process.

Match Summary

The game started cautiously, with both teams probing but creating few clear chances in the opening 20 minutes. The first notable opportunity came when a corner from Cam Wilson struck the post, and Jay Rollins’ follow-up shot was blocked by a Pontefract defender.

Guiseley gradually increased the pressure and took the lead just before half-time. A pass from Wilson caused confusion in the Pontefract defence, allowing Amir Berchil to break through and calmly finish with a lofted shot past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

The second half saw Pontefract start strongly, nearly equalising with a powerful left-footed effort that hit the crossbar. However, Guiseley responded swiftly, doubling their lead in the 55th minute. Berchil’s run down the left flank resulted in a cross that the Pontefract goalkeeper could only palm away, allowing Odunston to score from close range.

Pontefract reduced the deficit in the 68th minute when Alfie Perry curled a first-time left-footed shot into the top corner after a cut-back from the left wing was left unchallenged.

Guiseley maintained control for the remainder of the match, with Adam Lund coming close to extending the lead after a strong run but missing the target. In the final moments, substitute Aaron Martin sealed the win with a composed finish following a skilful run to keep the ball in play and lift it over the goalkeeper.
