Local partnership continues to support student wellbeing

Leeds University Union (LUU) and the University of Leeds have successfully achieved reaccreditation through the SOS Drug and Alcohol Impact programme, recognising their ongoing efforts to reduce drug and alcohol-related harm among students.

About the accreditation

The SOS Drug and Alcohol Impact programme, delivered by SOS UK, supports universities and student unions in implementing evidence-based approaches to alcohol and drug awareness, prevention, and support. The reaccreditation highlights the sustained commitment of LUU and the University of Leeds to student health and safety in this area.

Partnership with Forward Leeds

LUU and the University of Leeds work in partnership with Forward Leeds, an organisation that provides students with accurate information, practical advice, and specialist support relating to drug and alcohol use. This collaboration aims to ensure students have access to resources throughout their time at university.

Initiatives and campaigns

The partnership has delivered various initiatives designed to promote safer behaviours and informed decision-making among students, including:

  • The No Regrets campaign, encouraging safer drinking habits
  • Support services during Freshers’ events
  • Wellbeing campaigns throughout the academic year
  • The How to Party Properly online resource, offering advice on alcohol, drugs, sexual health, and personal safety

Feedback from student auditors

During the reaccreditation process, student auditors commended the partnership for its clear commitment to promoting student wellbeing through effective planning, evidence-based initiatives, and continuous improvement.

Statements from Leeds University Union

Amy Merchant-Cope, LUU Wellbeing Projects and Outreach Coordinator (Safer Communities), acknowledged the hard work of colleagues across both organisations in achieving reaccreditation. She also extended thanks to Forward Leeds, particularly Recovery Coordinator Amelia Clark, for their ongoing support and commitment to the partnership.

Looking ahead

The reaccreditation reflects the strength of collaboration across Leeds and a shared goal of creating an environment where students feel informed, supported, and able to seek help without judgement.

Students seeking assistance or advice related to drug and alcohol use can access support through Leeds University Union advice services.
