Better Forums event leads to three new policies for student welfare

On 12 May 2026, Leeds University Union held its Better Forums meeting, where 16 panellists discussed and voted on proposals aimed at improving student support services. Each proposal required a 75% majority to pass, meaning at least 12 votes in favour were needed. All three ideas presented were approved and will be implemented as Union policy for the next three years.

Childcare Support for Students

The first proposal focused on enhancing support for students with childcare responsibilities. It was passed with 15 votes in favour and one against. An amendment was also accepted, specifying that any additional funding provided to postgraduate research students (PGRs) for childcare needs should be means-tested.

Free Eye Examinations for PhD Students

The second policy proposal called for the University of Leeds to offer free eye examinations to PhD students. This was approved with 14 votes in favour and two against, making it a new campus-wide policy for the coming three years.

Flexible Payment Plans for International Tuition Fees

The final proposal recommended introducing flexible payment plans for international tuition fees. This idea was unanimously supported, with all 16 panellists voting in favour.

Additional Forum Activities

Alongside the policy discussions, the forum included accountability updates from student officers Katrina and Amara, who participated remotely. Documentation related to the meeting, including the agenda, minutes, and feedback, has been made available for those interested in further details.

Summary of Voting Results

  • Support for students with childcare needs: 15 yes, 1 no
