Local health officials highlight resources available to aid quitting smoking

As Stoptober approaches, public health leaders in Leeds are encouraging smokers to take advantage of the free support services available in the city to help quit smoking. The annual campaign aims to motivate smokers to make a quit attempt during October, with evidence suggesting that individuals who remain smoke-free for 28 days are significantly more likely to quit permanently.

Smoking rates in Leeds and England

Recent national statistics indicate that smoking prevalence in England fell below 10% for the first time in 2025, reaching 9.5%. In Leeds, smoking rates have also declined, dropping by one percentage point over the past year to 11.8%. Despite this improvement, the city’s smoking prevalence remains above the national average.

Support services available in Leeds

Leeds offers a variety of free services to assist those wishing to stop smoking. These include:

  • Personalised face-to-face and telephone support through Leeds Stop Smoking Services.
  • Access to quit-smoking aids such as nicotine replacement therapies and vape kits at no cost.
  • Assignment of a local smoking cessation coach to provide ongoing support.
  • Six months of free digital support via the Smoke Free app, which offers 24/7 access to stop smoking advisors and practical tools to track health improvements and financial savings.

Upcoming legislative changes

Stoptober coincides with preparations for the Tobacco and Vapes Act, which will come into effect on 1 January 2027. This legislation will raise the legal age of sale for tobacco products, meaning that anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 will never be legally permitted to purchase cigarettes or other tobacco products. The act is part of broader efforts to create a smokefree generation.
