First Openly Gay Couple Appointed Lord Mayor and Consort of Leeds

Leeds City Council has appointed Councillor Stephen Holroyd as the 132nd Lord Mayor of Leeds, with his partner Simon Mapals serving as the Lord Mayor’s Consort. This marks the first time an openly gay couple has held these positions in the city’s history. The appointments were confirmed at the council’s annual general meeting on 20 May 2026.
Background of the Lord Mayor and Consort
Stephen Holroyd was born and raised in Wakefield before moving to Leeds in 2014. He was elected to Leeds City Council in 2023, representing the Ardsley and Robin Hood ward. Prior to his election, Councillor Holroyd worked primarily in the hospitality sector, gaining experience in customer service, leadership, and community engagement. He later transitioned to the financial sector, providing support to individuals in Leeds and beyond.
In addition to his council responsibilities, Councillor Holroyd serves as a governor at Thorpe Primary School, where he contributes to the education and wellbeing of local children. He has also participated in charitable activities, including completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Simon Mapals, the Lord Mayor’s Consort, was born and raised in Leeds. He has worked in the hospitality industry since the age of thirteen and currently manages a well-known LGBTQ+ venue in the city.
Charitable Focus During Mayoral Term
As is customary, the new Lord Mayor has nominated two charities to support during his term of office:
- MESMAC: An organisation that has supported the LGBTQ+ community for over 35 years. MESMAC offers sexual health services, HIV support, rapid testing, mental health advocacy, and social groups, aiming to provide a safe and inclusive space.
- St Gemma’s Hospice: Yorkshire’s largest hospice, providing end-of-life care and support for people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The hospice offers a range of services to patients, families, and friends both in the hospice and the wider community.
Statements from the Lord Mayor and Consort
Councillor Stephen Holroyd said he was honoured to become Lord Mayor during the 400th anniversary year of Leeds receiving its Royal charter. He emphasised the city’s diversity and expressed his intention to engage with communities across Leeds, promoting unity and celebrating differences. He also highlighted his commitment to raising funds for MESMAC and St Gemma’s Hospice.
Simon Mapals expressed his honour at becoming the Lord Mayor’s Consort and his eagerness to support Councillor Holroyd in his duties. He looked forward to meeting the diverse communities of Leeds and building new connections throughout the year.
