Leeds City College’s ESOL podcast reaches over 100 countries

A podcast created by English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers at Leeds City College has attracted listeners from across the globe, now reaching audiences in more than 100 countries.

Origins and Development

Radio ESOL was initially developed by Jennie Cole, an ESOL teacher at Leeds City College, as a platform for students to share their experiences during the COVID-19 lockdown. Following the return to in-person teaching, student interest encouraged the continuation of the podcast. Ms Cole then established a formal presence on Spotify, expanding the podcast’s content to cover topics relevant to ESOL learners.

Content and Production

The podcast episodes cover a variety of subjects pertinent to learners, including CV writing, managing the cost of living, and balancing family commitments with study. New episodes are recorded in a classroom at the college’s Enfield Centre and released every Wednesday during term time.

Scripts for the podcast are prepared by ESOL staff, who tailor the language to suit different learner levels and focus on everyday topics. The episodes are produced and recorded with the involvement of students, providing practical speaking and listening opportunities.

Impact on Students

The podcast serves as a learning tool both inside and outside the classroom. It has helped students improve their English speaking and listening skills while also boosting their confidence.

  • Islam Ali, a student participant, said he had no confidence speaking English three years ago but gained confidence through involvement with Radio ESOL.
  • Another student, Aidel Borges, described the podcast as enjoyable and helpful for expanding vocabulary and building confidence, adding that they never miss an episode.

Accessing the Podcast

The Radio ESOL podcast is available on Spotify and continues to provide a resource for ESOL learners at Leeds City College and beyond.
