Local fundraiser completes endurance challenge to support neurological studies

A 72-year-old Yorkshire man has completed a demanding 24-hour running challenge to raise funds for brain research at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Mike Bosomworth, who celebrated his 72nd birthday in November, marked the occasion by running 72 miles within a single day.

On 4 July, Mike participated in Endure 24 Leeds, an event that attracted participants from across the region. He successfully raised over £1,500 for the Yorkshire Brain Appeal, a charity affiliated with Leeds Hospitals Charity that supports neurological research.

Personal motivation and resilience

Mike Bosomworth is a retired clinical scientist who has faced significant health challenges in recent years. Over the past two years, he has undergone major oral surgery and intensive radiotherapy treatment as part of his battle with cancer. Despite these difficulties, he remained committed to undertaking a physical challenge to contribute to a cause he values.

Reflecting on his motivation, Mike said: “I’m still here and active at 72, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. I wanted to take on a challenge that truly reflected both my age and the importance of the cause, and running a mile for every year of my life within 24 hours felt appropriate.”
