New research funding aims to improve hospital care and discharge for palliative patients

Leeds Hospitals Charity has announced a new funding opportunity to support research focused on enhancing the quality of end of life care and discharge processes for patients with palliative needs in hospital settings. This initiative follows a previous successful collaboration with Marie Curie and aims to build on efforts to improve patient experiences during their final days.

Details of the funding and application process

The charity is offering £25,000 in funding for research projects that address the challenges faced by patients receiving end of life care in hospitals within Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Applications for this funding will be accepted from 14 July to 28 September 2026.

Proposals should focus on improving both the quality of care provided to patients nearing the end of life and the discharge procedures to ensure smooth transitions from hospital to home or other care settings.

Research priorities and background

The funding call is informed by findings from the Marie Curie Better End of Life: Time to Care report published in 2024. Key points from the report include:

  • Approximately 30% of people surveyed across England and Wales spent their final week of life in hospital during 2023.
  • More than one-third of hospitalised patients in this group experienced overwhelming pain, which was distressing for both patients and their families.
  • The report highlights the need for improved pain management and care quality in hospital settings for end of life patients.

Research proposals that address these issues by developing practical solutions for hospital care and discharge processes are particularly encouraged.

How to apply

Interested researchers and healthcare professionals are invited to submit their proposals within the specified application window. Further guidance and details about the application process and research priorities are available on the Leeds Hospitals Charity website.
