May 26, 2026Leeds Grand Theatre Hosts New Musical Adaptation
The Karate Kid: The Musical is currently being performed at Leeds Grand Theatre, featuring local actors in key roles. The production offers a fresh take on the familiar story, combining music, dance, and drama to explore themes of identity, resilience, and cultural adaptation.
Insights from the Cast
During rehearsals, two of the show’s stars, Matt Mills and Abigail Amin, shared their perspectives on the production and their personal connections to Leeds.
Matt Mills as John Kreese
Matt Mills portrays John Kreese, the iconic antagonist of the story. He described The Karate Kid as an enduring underdog tale about a young person seeking grounding and identity through martial arts, which helps him confront bullying. Mills highlighted the story’s continued relevance in addressing themes of love, unity, and overcoming division.
Regarding his role, Mills noted the complexity of Kreese as a character shaped by trauma, contrasting him with Mr Miyagi. He said Kreese embodies a “hypermasculine, aggressive” persona driven by past pain, making him a compelling villain with underlying humanity.
Abigail Amin as Ali Mills
Abigail Amin plays Ali Mills, a key character in the story. Amin, who grew up in Woodlesford and attended CAPA College in Wakefield, expressed enthusiasm about performing at Leeds Grand Theatre, where she had previously participated in theatre courses and productions. She mentioned the support she has received from friends and family as she embarks on her first professional role after drama school.
Connections to Leeds
Both Mills and Amin reflected on their ties to the local arts scene. Mills, born and raised between Chapeltown and Harehills, credited his mother for encouraging his early exposure to diverse theatre experiences across Leeds venues. He described his theatre education as formative and expressed pride in returning to perform in his hometown.
Amin also shared her appreciation for returning to a venue familiar from her youth, noting the significance of performing locally and the comfort of family support during the tour.
