Creative team and cast

The musical was written by Des McAnuff and Robert Cary, based on extensive conversations with John Carter Cash, the couple’s son. John Carter Cash has contributed personal memories and insights to the script, aiming to present a truthful and nuanced portrayal of his parents.

The lead roles are played by Christopher Ryan Grant as Johnny Cash and Christina Bianco as June Carter Cash. Ryan O’Donnell plays John Carter Cash, who also serves as the narrator.

John Carter Cash’s perspective

John Carter Cash emphasises the importance of persistence, a value he attributes to both his parents. He has been involved in music throughout his life as a musician, songwriter, and record producer. He has worked with various notable artists and produced albums for both of his parents.

John has also written a biography of his mother, Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash, published in 2007. He acknowledges the challenges his parents faced, including struggles with addiction, and notes that they were open about these issues during their lifetimes.

He describes the musical as a balanced portrayal that shows both the strengths and vulnerabilities of Johnny and June, focusing on their love and relationship as well as their artistic legacy.
