New initiative aims to support patients and carers with refreshments and essentials

Leeds Hospitals Charity has invested £25,000 to extend its Charity Trolley service to additional sites within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The service, which was initially launched at Leeds Children’s Hospital, is now available at Chapel Allerton Hospital and St James’s University Hospital.

Service details and locations

The Charity Trolley is a volunteer-led initiative that brings refreshments, snacks, and essential items directly to patients’ bedsides. It aims to provide practical support and comfort, especially for those who may find it difficult to access on-site shops or refreshments.

  • Chapel Allerton Hospital: The trolley operates at weekends to serve patients with complex needs who often have extended hospital stays. This is particularly important as access to refreshments can be limited during these times.
  • St James’s University Hospital: The service focuses on supporting older patients, including those living with dementia or mobility issues, by offering drinks, snacks, and other essentials to help maintain hydration and nutrition.

Purpose and impact

The Charity Trolley service is designed to enhance patient care by providing small but meaningful moments of kindness. By delivering refreshments and necessities directly to patients, the service helps to address challenges faced by those who may be less able to leave their wards or access hospital shops independently.

Volunteers play a key role in operating the trolleys, engaging with patients and carers to offer support beyond just the physical items provided.

Leeds Hospitals Charity’s investment reflects a commitment to improving patient experience across the trust’s hospitals through practical initiatives that respond to patient needs.
