Government investment aims to support housing and economic development

The leader of Leeds City Council has responded positively to a new multi-million pound funding package announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. The funding is intended to support ongoing regeneration projects across the city, focusing on delivering homes, jobs, and opportunities for local residents.

Details of the funding and targeted areas

The central government funding was confirmed during the UK’s Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum held in Leeds on 20 May 2026. It will contribute to regeneration efforts in several key locations, including:

  • West End Riverside
  • Meadow Lane
  • The Temple district, where plans include bringing the Grade I listed Temple Works building back into use

These areas are part of the city’s former industrial heartlands and have been the focus of ongoing transformation initiatives.

Council leader’s response

Councillor James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council, described the funding announcement as a “vote of confidence” in Leeds and its regeneration potential. He acknowledged the progress made through various projects in recent years but emphasised that further work is needed to fully realise the city’s potential.

He highlighted that the funding will assist in delivering much-needed housing in strategic locations such as West End Riverside and Meadow Lane, as well as revitalising the Temple district. Additionally, the investment is expected to facilitate the creation of commercial and leisure spaces, which could enhance Leeds’s reputation as a business hub and support an inclusive local economy.

Additional government support for Leeds South Village

The announcement followed confirmation that Homes England, the government’s housing and regeneration agency, will provide a £16 million infrastructure grant to Caddick Group. This grant is aimed at supporting the development of Leeds South Village, a new mixed-use neighbourhood located in the South Bank area of the city.

The combined funding efforts reflect ongoing collaboration between the council, government agencies, and private partners to drive regeneration and economic growth in Leeds.
