MP engages with students about T Level studies and career aspirations

Hilary Benn, Member of Parliament for Leeds Central, visited Leeds City College’s Printworks campus as part of the national T Levels Week. The visit provided an opportunity for Mr Benn to meet students undertaking T Level qualifications and learn about their experiences and future plans.

Tour and discussions with students

During his visit, Mr Benn toured the campus and spoke directly with students studying T Levels. These conversations focused on how the qualifications are helping students develop skills, gain confidence, and acquire practical experience through industry placements. Students shared their ambitions and how their studies are preparing them for employment or further education.

About T Levels

T Levels are two-year technical qualifications equivalent to three A levels. They combine classroom learning with a substantial industry placement, designed in collaboration with employers to equip students with relevant skills and workplace experience.

Growing enrolment and regional impact

  • Enrolments in T Levels at Leeds City College have increased significantly, from 149 students in the 2021/22 academic year to a projected 653 students in 2026/27.
  • The qualifications aim to address skills shortages in Leeds and the wider region by aligning education with employer needs.

Comments from Hilary Benn and college leadership

Mr Benn commented on the visit, highlighting the confidence and clear direction demonstrated by the students. He emphasised the importance of raising awareness about T Levels to help more young people understand the opportunities these qualifications provide.

Gemma Simmons-Blench, Deputy CEO of Luminate Education Group, which includes Leeds City College, noted the vital role T Levels play in meeting regional skills demands. She also highlighted the importance of employer partnerships in delivering practical experience and supporting students’ transition into employment or further study.

T Levels Week

The visit coincided with T Levels Week, a national event recognising the achievements of students undertaking T Level qualifications and promoting the benefits these courses offer to young people and employers alike.
