Leeds Student Balances Work, Study and Societies

A third-year student shares her experience of working and studying at Leeds University

Isla, a third-year student at Leeds University, has been combining her studies with part-time work at Leeds University Union (LUU) since her first year. She currently works as a Digital Content Assistant in the Marketing and Communications Team, having initially started as a Supervisor in the Terrace.

Working while studying

Isla describes the challenge of balancing work commitments with academic and social life, noting that working students often find it difficult to relate to peers who do not have jobs. She emphasises that students are not alone in this situation and highlights the flexibility offered by LUU, which accommodates her university timetable, allowing her to attend lectures while maintaining her work schedule.

Role and responsibilities

In her role as Digital Content Assistant, Isla is responsible for much of the written content found on the LUU website, emails and online platforms. Her workdays generally follow a 9-to-5 pattern, but with adjustments as needed for her studies.

Support and opportunities

Isla praises the supportive environment at LUU, particularly mentioning her co-ordinator, Mia, and the wider team. She values the professional experience gained through her role, which she believes will benefit her future career. Isla also highlights the opportunities provided by the union to engage with the university community and develop workplace skills.

University life beyond work

Alongside her job and studies, Isla is actively involved in LUU Musical Theatre, participating in socials, fundraisers and rehearsals. The society is preparing for a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has plans for the upcoming academic year.

Isla studies BA English Literature and Theatre Studies and plans to pursue a PGCE after graduation. She enjoys spending time on campus, combining work, classes and hobbies such as singing, going to live music events and socialising with friends.
