Local learner secures permanent banking job following industry experience

A Leeds City College student has successfully transitioned from education to employment after completing a T Level qualification and securing a full-time position with Halifax Bank.

Hammad Sajjad, who studied Business Management and Administration at Leeds City College, was offered a permanent role at Halifax following an industry placement with the bank. The placement formed part of his T Level studies and provided practical experience in the banking sector.

Pathway into banking

From an early age, Hammad had an interest in banking and finance and was keen to pursue a career in the industry. However, he sought an opportunity to gain hands-on experience to complement his academic learning. The T Level programme, which combines classroom study with industry placements, offered this opportunity.

Hammad said the placement was a key factor in his decision to study a T Level, as it allowed him to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. He added that the experience exceeded his expectations by leading directly to a full-time job offer.

Skills development during placement

During his time at Halifax, Hammad’s responsibilities included assisting customers with everyday banking needs and supporting branch visitors. This role provided insight into the daily operations of a bank and involved learning to use various banking systems.

Through this experience, Hammad developed important workplace skills such as:

  • Digital literacy
  • Communication
  • Teamwork

These skills are recognised as valuable by employers and align with government initiatives aimed at strengthening technical education and preparing young people for the workforce.

Perspectives from educators and future plans

Debbie Peart, T Level Business Course Leader at Leeds City College, commented on Hammad’s progress, noting his diligence and growing confidence throughout the year. She welcomed the outcome of his placement leading to employment.

Looking ahead, Hammad aims to build a long-term career in financial services with aspirations towards senior leadership roles. He advises future T Level students to select placements aligned with their career goals and to fully engage with opportunities presented.
