Leeds Theatre Launches Magic Beanstalk Growing Contest

Local families invited to join gardening challenge inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk

A new gardening competition has been launched in Leeds, encouraging residents to grow their own beanstalks as part of a collaboration between the Carriageworks Theatre and The Arium horticultural centre. The initiative ties in with this year’s Christmas pantomime production of Jack and the Beanstalk, which is scheduled to run from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Magic Bean Packs available at The Arium

Participants can purchase a Magic Bean Pack from The Arium, which contains broad bean seeds and all the necessary materials to grow them at home. Each purchase grants automatic entry into a prize draw, with the winner receiving a family ticket to attend the festive pantomime at The Carriageworks Theatre.

Community engagement and festive tradition

The Carriageworks Theatre’s Christmas pantomime has been a popular event in Leeds since the theatre opened in 2005, attracting over 300,000 attendees. This year’s production will feature Jez Edwards, a well-known figure in Leeds’ pantomime scene for the past 16 years.

Jez Edwards recently visited The Arium to officially launch the growing contest. He highlighted the event as a way to engage families with the upcoming pantomime while promoting gardening and outdoor activity during the summer months.

Council support for the initiative

Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, Councillor Salma Arif, expressed support for the competition. She noted that the event provides an early opportunity for the community to get involved in the festive celebrations and encourages interest in nature, sustainability, and gardening.
