Union addresses concerns over proposed Students for Life Society

Leeds University Union (LUU) has issued a statement following student feedback regarding the potential formation of a Students for Life Society. The Union acknowledged the strong and emotional responses from students, particularly those affected by reproductive injustice and gender-based violence.

Support for Bodily Autonomy and Legal Rights

The student executive team affirmed their support for bodily autonomy and access to safe, legal abortion, describing these as fundamental rights aligned with UK law. They emphasised that these principles underpin the Union’s commitment to equality, liberation, and student wellbeing.

Recognition of Student Concerns

LUU recognised that many students’ concerns extend beyond the existence of the proposed society, touching on issues of safety, belonging, and inclusion on campus. The Union stated that ensuring students feel safe and respected is a priority and acknowledged the harm that can arise when rights and lived experiences are challenged.

Legal Framework Governing Student Societies

As a charity, Leeds University Union operates within a legal framework that regulates the formation of student societies. The Union explained that it cannot legally prevent a society from applying to form based solely on the views it holds, even if those views are opposed by other students. However, affiliation with the Union does not imply endorsement of a society’s beliefs.

Any society must comply with the law and LUU policies, which prohibit behaviour that is intimidating, discriminatory, misleading, or harmful. The Union provides mechanisms for accountability and encourages reporting of harmful speech through its support services.

Commitment to Student Rights and Welfare

  • LUU supports students’ rights to organise, express opposition, and protest peacefully.
  • Collective actions such as petitions are recognised as legitimate means for students to express their views.
  • The Union remains committed to listening to students and supporting those affected by the situation.
  • LUU emphasises its dedication to creating a safe, inclusive campus environment respectful of bodily autonomy and reproductive justice.

Recent Initiatives Related to Gender and Reproductive Health

  • Campaign to classify misogyny as a hate crime.
  • Designation of LUU as an Endometriosis-friendly Union.
  • Restart of the Reclaim the Night campaign, focusing on student involvement.
  • Organisation of International Women’s Week with a focus on reproductive justice.
  • Support for Women+ in Sport to enhance leadership and physical activity opportunities.
  • Passage of a motion supporting reproductive choice, with allocated funding to advance related policies.

Support Services for Students

The Union reminded students that support is available through LUU and the University for those experiencing crisis or distress related to this issue. Services include wellbeing and advice support, specialist signposting, and confidential conversations with trained staff. Students are encouraged to seek help and assured that they do not need to face difficulties alone.

The statement was signed by the student executive officers representing Union Affairs and Communications, Activities and Opportunities, Education, International and Postgraduate, and Equality and Liberation.
